LEFTOVERS RETURNS TO THE MARBURGER FARM ANTIQUE SHOW

Brenham Shop Owners now in Tent E

Marburger Farm welcomes Leftovers Antiques of Brenham, Texas back to Marburger Farm after an absence of several years. Leftovers partners Michael Breddin and Ed Fulkerson were among the earliest Marburger dealers, with excited shoppers virtually dismantling their large booth of Americana. From crusty Kansas cupboards to collections of out-of-the-ordinary smalls, off it always went to new homes across America.

In the years since then, Leftovers has become a full-service home décor business with a 10,000 square foot store on Highway 290, just west of Brenham. During that time, how has their approach to antiques evolved?

“We’ve kept true to Americana, and to Ed’s Kansas roots,” says Breddin. “But we’ve expanded into English and French, with about 50% American and 50% English and French. We try to keep a creative mix so that each style makes the other better. Besides, it turns out that Ed had a grandfather from England. We’ve picked two containers to arrive from Europe just before Marburger. And, of course, we’ll combine it all with a funky twist.”

Fulkerson responds by saying, “Well, very few dealers carry true 18th c. English country, especially early paint, pine and paneled fronts. Today Leftovers sells antiques with clean lines, a little more formal, a little less crusty. It’s a new style of traditional that is very functional, with an emphasis on big. We sell massive pieces for Texas homes. We might be a little touched in the head, but we don’t shy away from a 10 x10 piece.”

Among antiques coming to Marburger Farm will be large farm tables and store counters from Kansas and Minnesota, plus Welsh cupboards, French garden concrete and a “Court” cupboard from 17th c. English nobility.

“It’s good to be back at Marburger,” says Fulkerson. “Besides the store, it’s the only show that we will be doing for Antiques Week. Come see us!” Find Leftovers in Tent E, near the Silver Dollar Saloon and the Farmhouse, smack dab in the middle of Marburger Farm.

To kick off Antiques Week, Leftovers will host a party in their store on Saturday March 26, with food, drinks, live jazz and a store-wide sale. The event begins at 6 pm at 3900 Hwy 290 in Brenham. For details, see www.leftoversantiques.net or call 979-830-8496.

Leftovers is not the only exhibitor moving to Marburger Farm. Long-time Tent B dealer Mo McSwain has noticed a trend in more dealers wanting to exhibit in the twice-yearly mega-show. “All my favorite dealers are coming to Marburger,” she says. “Marburger Farm is part of the American antiques vocabulary. Marburger is going to be the premiere antique show in the USA.” In addition to Leftovers returning to the show, so is McSwain’s sister, exhibitor Janet Romine of Austin, TX.

Also an early Marburger vendor, Romine specializes in selling ironstone and vintage school flashcards for spelling and reading. “I was a terrible student,” she says. “I’m redeeming myself by saving and selling flashcards.”

Why the return to the Marburger Farm Antique Show? “Marburger Farm is the only place to be,” she answers. “It’s the mother-ship.”

To everyone, welcome back to Marburger Farm!

Leftovers Overseas - Report from the Road

"When you pass Stonehenge, take the third road to the right."

Those are recent shopping directions given to Leftovers Antiques owners Michael Breddin and Ed Fulkerson on their 2011 trip to England. Here’s a text from the trip:

“The trip has begun with a bang. We have been here a week now, dug through barns, rummaged through attics and visited many a pub... It has been a cold and wet trip, soggy socks and squishy shoes quickly find a place next to the fire to dry.

Our trip has been fruitful. Our first container is far beyond full and, though we pace ourselves, the second is getting close to full. We keep telling the shipper to pack tighter and push harder to make space for the purchases made in the next two weeks. Our shippers, though old and even older, are doing a great job.

The load has evolved into by far the best we have found. Some of the pieces include:

A very large ornately carved gilt mirror with a life size eagle at the top; the most wonderful oval French wine tasting table in old gray paint; several painted chest of drawers and crusty old pub tables with great early paint; a variety of 18th century cupboards and cabinets; garden planters, statuary, and urns; old painted French daybeds and farm tables; a wonderful collection of 18th century English copper; a settle dated 1653; more mirrors, paintings, and prints than we have walls for; collections of baskets, boxes, and bins in every size and shape for every purpose; and a most wonderful collection of French glass domes and bases in assorted sizes and shapes.

The trip has been great and more treasures are to be found in the days to come.  The loads, the age, the color, the textures, the styles and the stories that these treasures could tell---- that is the magic that we can't wait to share when these loads arrive at Marburger Farm.  Cheers, Michael  and Ed”
